A flyboard operates with a jet propulsion system attached to a board, kind of like a skateboard that straps to the user’s feet. A long hose connects the board to a jet ski, which pumps water up from the sea. The turbines then expel the water at a high speed through the hose, propelling the flyboard operator up to 20 meters above the water.
Once you’re airborne, you can move the flyboard in all directions simply by tilting your feet — point your toes down to move forward, up to move backward, and keep your feet flat to stay still. Once you get the hang of the basics, you can try out special moves such as spins and flips.
TikTok helped to spread this sport around the world and in Saudi, where it’s popular on the beaches of the Red Sea. Jeddah is an ideal location for flyboarding, with three beaches where the sport is prominent: Obhur, Praia Beach and Sol Beach Resort. Female trainers are available at the rental point at Praia Beach, including Layan Al Azhari, who has more than 107,000 followers on her flyboarding TikTok account. “Many women come to me on the beach to learn the sport,” she says, “which is a great indicator that women in society are interested in playing a sport.”
2022 Saudi flyboarding champion Musab Felemban offers training through his company, Seven Seas, for people interested in practicing the sport in Jeddah. “This sport is available to everyone, and my task is to explain and train,” he says. “The participant must have good balance and strength in the legs and thighs.”
Flyboarders will need a wetsuit and a helmet and life jacket for safety. Children must be at least 12 years old to practice flyboarding, and rental companies require parents to sign a waiver for children under 18. Flyboarding is not recommended for people who have a fear of heights or water. Pregnant people and those with back pain should not flyboard.
“Training in the Seven Seas includes rental of the equipment and tools used in flyboarding, such as a helmet and a life jacket,” Felemban explains. “The practitioner can also purchase and keep their safety equipment.”
Prices vary by rental company, but you can expect to pay about SAR300-450 (US$80-120) for 30 minutes of flyboarding. Enthusiasts across Saudi agree that once you have your first experience, you won’t be able to forget the adrenaline rush and the feeling of being on top of the world as you soar over the Red Sea.
