December is one of the easiest months for UK families to travel for Umrah. There are three main reasons for this.
School holidays match your travel dates. Most UK schools break for Christmas around 18 December 2026. This gives families a two-week window to travel without children missing school. If you can leave earlier in December, you will find lower prices and smaller crowds before the holiday rush starts.
The weather is comfortable. Makkah stays warm in December with daytime temperatures around 28 to 32 degrees Celsius. Madinah is cooler, often dropping to 12 to 18 degrees at night. This is much easier for walking, Tawaf, and daily prayers compared to the extreme summer heat. Children and older family members will feel much more comfortable.
Crowds are smaller than Ramadan. Ramadan and Hajj season bring the biggest crowds to Makkah and Madinah. December is quieter. You will find more space in the Haram, shorter waits for Rawdah access, and a calmer atmosphere for family worship.
If you have performed Umrah before, some things have changed. Here is what you need to know for December 2026.
Nusuk app is now required for Rawdah booking. You must use the official Nusuk app to reserve your time slot for praying in the Rawdah in Madinah. Slots fill up fast during school holidays, so book as early as possible after you arrive.
Saudi e-visa process is faster. UK passport holders can now get an ETA visa online in most cases within 24 to 48 hours. You no longer need to visit an embassy for a standard Umrah visa. Elite Umrah handles the full visa process for your family as part of every package.
Haramain High-Speed Train is the best way to travel between cities. The train connects Jeddah Airport, Makkah, and Madinah. The journey from Makkah to Madinah takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes. It is clean, fast, and much more comfortable than a long bus ride, especially for families with children.
New flight routes from the UK. Saudia Airlines and British Airways now offer more direct flights from London Heathrow to Jeddah and Madinah. Turkish Airlines and Qatar Airways also provide good connecting options from regional UK airports.
Our every Umrah family group package includes the essentials you need for a smooth trip. Here is what you get.
You can choose to add meals, private transport, or upgraded hotel rooms based on your budget. We keep everything in one booking so you do not have to manage separate tickets and reservations on your own.
Hotel location matters a lot for families. A hotel that is far from the Haram might save you money on paper, but the daily walk can tire out children and elderly family members very quickly. Here are some hotels we regularly use for family packages at different price levels.
Makkah Hotels
| Star Level | Hotel Name | Distance from Haram | Good For |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5-Star | Hilton Makkah Convention | 2-minute walk | Families wanting maximum comfort |
| 5-Star | Swissotel Makkah | 3-minute walk | Large families needing bigger rooms |
| 4-Star | Elaf Kinda Hotel | 5-minute walk | Good balance of price and location |
| 4-Star | Makkah Hotel by Pullman | 4-minute walk | Families wanting modern rooms |
| 3-Star | Nawara Al Makkah | 10-minute walk | Budget families happy with short shuttle rides |
Madinah Hotels
| Star Level | Hotel Name | Distance from Prophet’s Mosque | Good For |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5-Star | Pullman Zamzam Madinah | 2-minute walk | Families wanting easy Rawdah access |
| 5-Star | Hilton Madinah | 3-minute walk | Comfortable stays with family rooms |
| 4-Star | Saja Al Madinah | 5-minute walk | Good value near the Mosque |
| 3-Star | Al Eiman Ohud | 8-minute walk | Budget families on shorter trips |
All hotels listed above offer family rooms or connecting room options. We always check room availability for your specific travel dates before confirming your booking.
Flights can change the total cost and comfort of your trip more than you might expect. Here is what you should know.
Direct flights save time and energy. Saudia Airlines and British Airways fly direct from London Heathrow to Jeddah. The flight takes about 6 hours. Direct flights cost more, but they save your family from long layovers and the stress of changing planes with luggage and children.
Connecting flights cost less. Turkish Airlines (via Istanbul), Qatar Airways (via Doha), and Emirates (via Dubai) offer connecting flights from London, Manchester, Birmingham, and other UK cities. These can save you £100 to £300 per person compared to direct flights. The trade-off is a longer total travel time, usually 9 to 14 hours depending on the layover.
Choose your arrival airport wisely. If your package starts in Makkah, flying into Jeddah makes sense. Jeddah Airport is about 90 minutes from Makkah by road or 45 minutes by Haramain train. If your package starts in Madinah, look for flights that land at Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz Airport in Madinah. This saves your family a long transfer on the first day.
Baggage rules matter. Some budget flight options only include 23 kg of checked luggage per person. Families often need more, especially for a 10 or 14-night trip. We always check baggage allowances before we confirm your flights and can add extra luggage if needed.
Every family has different priorities. Some want the lowest price possible. Others want a hotel right next to the Haram and are happy to pay more. The best choice depends on your family’s specific situation. Here is how to think about it.
Look at the total cost, not just the headline price. A package that looks cheap might not include airport transfers, breakfast, or enough baggage. When you add these costs later, the “cheap” package can end up costing the same as a standard one. Always compare what is actually included.
Match the package to your family size. A couple with one child has very different needs from a family of six traveling with grandparents. Larger families often save money with quad rooms or connecting rooms instead of booking multiple separate rooms. Tell us your exact family makeup and we will find the best room setup for you.
Think about your family’s energy levels. If you are traveling with toddlers or elderly parents, a hotel that is 15 minutes from the Haram will be very difficult. The daily walking will drain everyone’s energy and make the trip harder than it needs to be. In this case, paying a little more for a closer hotel is a smart decision. If your family is young and fit, a slightly farther hotel with a shuttle service can work well and save you money.
Early December is cheaper than late December. The first two weeks of December 2026 (1 to 15 December) are usually less expensive than the Christmas holiday period (18 December onwards). If your schedule is flexible, traveling early in the month can save your family 10 to 20 percent on the total package price.
Where you fly from affects both price and convenience. Here is a quick guide for families departing from different UK cities.
London departures. London Heathrow and Gatwick offer the most flight options, including direct Saudia and British Airways flights to Jeddah and Madinah. Prices from London are often the most competitive because there are more airlines and more seats available.
Birmingham departures. Birmingham Airport has good connecting flights through Istanbul (Turkish Airlines), Doha (Qatar Airways), and Dubai (Emirates). Families from the Midlands often find Birmingham more convenient than traveling to London, even if the flight has a stopover.
Manchester departures. Manchester Airport serves families across the North of England. Saudia Airlines operates seasonal direct flights from Manchester to Jeddah. Connecting options are also available through Istanbul and Doha.
Bradford and Leeds departures. Families in Yorkshire can fly from Leeds Bradford Airport with connections through Amsterdam (KLM) or Istanbul (Turkish Airlines). This saves a long drive to Manchester or London.
Tell us your nearest airport when you request a quote. We will find the best flight option for your family from your local city.
Traveling with small children requires extra planning. Here are practical tips from families we have helped in previous years.
Pack layers for Madinah. Makkah stays warm, but Madinah nights in December can drop to 10 or 12 degrees. Children feel the cold more than adults. Bring warm jackets, socks, and a light blanket for Fajr prayers.
Bring a foldable stroller. The Haram floors are smooth and stroller-friendly in most areas. A lightweight stroller will help during long Tawaf sessions and walking between the hotel and the Mosque.
Plan rest time between prayers. Children get tired quickly in crowded spaces. Do not try to attend every single prayer in the Haram. Alternate between hotel prayers and Haram prayers to give your children time to rest and eat.
Carry snacks and water bottles. Food options near the Haram can be crowded during peak prayer times. Having snacks and water ready will keep young children calm and hydrated.
Book a room with a kitchenette if possible. Some 4-star and 5-star hotels offer family suites with a small kitchen area. This makes it much easier to prepare milk, baby food, or simple meals for picky eaters.
