Most UK pilgrims overpay for their Umrah by £300 to £600 per person. They do not do this on purpose. It happens because the “cheap” package they booked was missing half the things they actually needed. Then they paid for those things separately during the trip, and the total cost went up fast.
We have helped thousands of UK Muslims plan their Umrah journeys. We see the same mistakes every season. Pilgrims book a package that looks cheap on the website. Then they arrive in Makkah and find out their hotel is a 25-minute walk from the Haram. Or they realize airport transfers were not included. Or they discover they need to pay extra for Ziyarat trips.
Let us explain exactly where the money goes. We will share real pricing data from our own bookings. We will show you real numbers. By the end, you will know how to plan an Umrah that is both comfortable and affordable.
The Real Cost of a “Cheap” Umrah Package
Let us start with the biggest mistake we see.
Last year, we looked at 15 budget Umrah packages advertised by different UK travel agencies. The average price on the website was £749 per person for a 10-day trip. That sounds very affordable.
But here is what those packages did not include:
- Visa processing: £30 per person
- Airport transfers in Jeddah: £55 per person
- Ziyarat transport in Makkah and Madinah: £45 per person
- Extra taxi costs because the hotel was 2km from the Haram: £150 per person over 10 days
When you add all of these, the real average cost came to £1,029 per person. That is £280 more than the advertised price.
Now compare this with a mid-range package at £1,099 that includes all of the above. The mid-range package is actually cheaper in the end. And the hotel is 400 meters from the Haram instead of 2 kilometers away.
This is the first rule of saving money on Umrah: look at the total cost, not the headline price.
How Much Does Umrah Actually Cost Each Month?
The month you choose to travel has the biggest impact on your total cost. Most people know that Umrah in Ramadan is expensive. But they do not know exactly how much prices change from month to month.
Here is the average per-person cost for a 10-day Umrah package from the UK, based on Elite Umrah bookings over the past two years:
| Month | Average Cost Per Person |
|---|---|
| Ramadan (last 10 days) | £2,400 to £3,100 |
| Ramadan (first 10 days) | £1,800 to £2,200 |
| Rajab | £1,300 to £1,600 |
| Sha’ban | £1,350 to £1,650 |
| Shawwal | £1,100 to £1,400 |
| Dhul Qi’dah | £1,050 to £1,300 |
| Muharram | £1,050 to £1,350 |
| Safar | £950 to £1,200 |
| Rabi al-Awwal | £1,000 to £1,250 |
| Rabi al-Thani | £950 to £1,200 |
| Jumada al-Ula | £950 to £1,150 |
| Jumada al-Thani | £950 to £1,200 |
These prices are according Islamic calendar. Consider December and other Holidays months also, because prices also go higher in these months.
The difference between the most expensive time and the cheapest time is over £2,000 per person. For a family of four, that is £8,000.
If your budget is tight, the months of Safar, Rabi al-Thani, and Jumada al-Ula offer the best prices. The weather in Makkah during these months is also more bearable than the peak summer heat. You will have a more comfortable experience and pay much less.
When Exactly Should You Book?
Many people tell you to “book early.” But what does early mean? Three months? Six months? A year?
From our booking data, here is what we have found.
The best time to book is 12 to 16 weeks before your travel date for off-peak months. For Ramadan, you should book 18 to 24 weeks in advance.
If you book inside 6 weeks of your travel date, you will pay an average of 22% more. This is because flight prices go up and the best hotel rooms near the Haram are already taken.
If you book too early (more than 8 months ahead), you also do not get the best deals. Airlines have not released their lowest fares yet, and hotel contracts for the season may not be finalized.
So the sweet spot is clear: 3 to 4 months before for normal months, and 5 to 6 months before for Ramadan.
What You Actually Get for Your Money
This is where most pilgrims lose money without realizing it. They focus on star ratings instead of location and real comfort.
Let us look at some real examples in Makkah.
Swissôtel Makkah (5-star)
- Distance from Haram: 50 meters
- Approximate cost per night: £180 to £250
- Best for: Elderly pilgrims or those with mobility issues who need to be as close as possible
Elaf Kinda Hotel (4-star)
- Distance from Haram: 350 meters (about 4-minute walk)
- Approximate cost per night: £110 to £150
- Best for: Families and couples who want comfort without the highest price
Emaar Grand Hotel (3-star)
- Distance from Haram: 450 meters (about 6-minute walk)
- Approximate cost per night: £70 to £100
- Best for: Budget travelers who still want to walk to the Haram easily
Now look at the difference. The Swissôtel is 50 meters away and costs around £200 per night. The Elaf Kinda is 350 meters away and costs around £130 per night. The walk difference is only 4 minutes. But over a 10-day stay, you save about £700 per room by choosing the 4-star hotel.
For most healthy pilgrims, a 4-minute extra walk is nothing. You are walking much more than that inside the Haram itself. But the £700 saving is real money you can use for other things.
Here is our advice: pick a hotel within 500 meters of the Haram. Do not worry about the star rating as much. A clean 3-star hotel that is 400 meters from the Haram is much better than a 5-star hotel that is 2 kilometers away and requires a shuttle bus.
Which UK Airport Gives You the Cheapest Flights?
Your departure airport matters more than you think. We compared average round-trip flight costs from different UK airports to Jeddah based on our 2025 bookings:
| Departure Airport | Average Round-Trip Fare |
|---|---|
| London Heathrow | £420 |
| London Gatwick | £395 |
| Manchester | £375 |
| Birmingham | £350 |
| Glasgow | £405 |
| Bradford/Leeds | £385 |
Birmingham is consistently the cheapest option. For a family of four, flying from Birmingham instead of Heathrow saves around £280 on flights alone.
If you live in London, it might not make sense to travel to Birmingham just for cheaper flights. But if you live in the Midlands or the North, always check Birmingham and Manchester before defaulting to Heathrow.
The Date Shift Trick: How 11 Days Can Save You £270
Here is something most pilgrims do not know. Umrah package prices change based on UK school holidays, not just Islamic calendar dates.
In February 2024, a 10-day Umrah package departing on February 10th cost £1,350 per person. The exact same package (same hotel, same flights, same services) departing on February 21st cost £1,080 per person.
Why the £270 difference? Because February 10th fell during the UK half-term school holiday. Airlines and hotels charge more during school breaks because demand is higher. February 21st was after the half-term ended, so prices dropped.
If you do not have school-age children, always check the UK school holiday calendar before picking your dates. Shifting your trip by just one or two weeks can save you hundreds of pounds.
Real Budget Scenarios for Different Pilgrims
Every pilgrim has a different situation. Here are three real scenarios to help you understand what a comfortable Umrah actually costs.
Scenario 1: Family of Four (2 adults, 2 children under 12) from Manchester
- Travel month: Safar
- Duration: 10 days
- Flights from Manchester: £1,380 (booked 14 weeks ahead)
- Hotel (two connecting rooms, 4-star, 400m from Haram): £1,100
- Visa, transfers, and Ziyarat: £380
- Meals: £300
- Total: £3,160 (£790 per person)
Scenario 2: Couple from London
- Travel month: Rabi al-Awwal
- Duration: 10 days
- Flights from Gatwick: £780 (booked 12 weeks ahead)
- Hotel (one double room, 4-star, 350m from Haram): £650
- Visa, transfers, and Ziyarat: £190
- Meals: £150
- Total: £1,770 (£885 per person)
Scenario 3: Solo Traveler from Birmingham
- Travel month: Jumada al-Ula
- Duration: 10 days
- Flights from Birmingham: £345 (booked 13 weeks ahead)
- Hotel (shared twin room, 3-star, 450m from Haram): £350
- Visa, transfers, and Ziyarat: £130
- Meals: £100
- Total: £925
These are realistic numbers. You can see that a comfortable Umrah does not have to cost £2,000 or more per person. With the right timing and choices, a family can do it for under £800 per person.
Insider Tips From Running Umrah Trips
These are things we have learned from organizing Umrah trips for UK pilgrims over many years. You will not find these tips anywhere else
Tip 1: The Ajyad district in Makkah gives the best value. Hotels on Ajyad Road are typically 300 to 500 meters from the Haram. But they cost 15 to 25% less than hotels on Ibrahim Al Khalil Street, even at the same star rating. The walk is almost the same. The price is not.
Tip 2: Madinah hotel prices drop after the first 3 nights. Most pilgrims stay in Madinah for only 3 or 4 nights. Hotels know this. If your itinerary lets you stay longer in Madinah, ask for a per-night rate instead of a bundled price. You can often negotiate a lower rate for nights 4 and 5.
Tip 3: Group transport costs level out at 15 to 20 people. If you are a family of 5 or 6, do not book a private car for airport transfers. Join a group transfer instead. The cost per person drops significantly when the vehicle is shared among 15 or more passengers. You can save £40 to £60 per person this way.
Tip 4: Book your Ziyarat trips through agents like us or other travel company, not from a random driver outside. Many pilgrims get approached by taxi drivers outside their hotel offering Ziyarat tours. These drivers often charge 2 to 3 times the normal rate. Your hotel reception or your Umrah group leader can arrange the same tour for much less.
Tip 5: Carry a refillable water bottle. This sounds small, but Zamzam water is available everywhere in the Haram. Buying bottled water every day for 10 days adds up to £30 to £50 per person. It is a small saving, but every bit helps when you are on a budget.
What Does Good Value Actually Mean?
We have talked a lot about saving money. But we want to be clear about something. Good value does not mean the cheapest option. Good value means you get everything you need for a comfortable trip at a fair price.
A good-value Umrah package should include:
- A clean hotel within 500 meters walking distance of the Haram
- Return flights with reasonable timings (not 3 AM departures with long layovers)
- Airport transfers in Jeddah or Madinah
- Visa processing
- At least some meals (breakfast is the most important)
- Ziyarat transport for key sites
- A UK-based contact person you can call if something goes wrong
If a package includes all of these and costs £1,099, that is better value than a package that costs £749 but is missing half of these things.
